Life, Culture and Travels from the perspective of a Cuban
Islander Polymita
Categories: Cuba Inside Out

The polymita picta is an endemic land snail from the most Eastern part of Cuba. I have never visited the east of the island but I have been in love with polymitas since I was little. The large variety of  vibrant colours and designs makes the polymita one of the most beautiful snails you could ever see. The polymita looks like a hard colourful candy but it is very fragile. It is impossible to wear a polymita necklace or bracelet  for a long time as they get destroyed easily.

Polymitas are protected to avoid their extinction. They cannot be sold in the street markets  but still can be found “under the table” if you ask around. The  continued use of polymitas for craft and the indiscriminated sale to foreigner collectors is a concern for many.
