Four more weeks to go and I will be out of Toronto for a while. In the MEANtime I am working, continuing the extense process of emptying out an apartment and finding things to do/spending time with friends in the city. Not much time left to sleep I suppose.
This past Friday I went to Babalúu (136 Yorkville Ave) for some Latin dancing. Some colleagues suggested the place and it did not take me more than two seconds to agree. Last time I visited this club was right after Michael Jackson’s death (June,2009) as I remember the DJ  playing Billy Jean. I also do not go to Latin places in Toronto very ofter since I would rather go to a rock, techno, jazz or any other type of club. Either way I had a lot of fun and I absolutely love dancing so I jumped on my super high heels and walked down the street.
My opinion about the place. It is a bit overpriced. The entrance cover is $14 on Fridays and the drinks are not cheap, but this is Yorkville, the fancy hood in Toronto. What surprises me is that for such a top place in Toronto the music needed some serious update and variety. The DJ was playing Jerry Rivera! and more than one song in a row! This guy was famous in 1994. It felt like a trip to my high school. Sorry, Mr. DJ but the Cuban was not pleased at all with the music selection. No Rumba, Conga, Samba, not even Van Van. I am not asking for Habana Abierta or Kelvis. But did they ever hear of Yerba Buena, for example? It is fine to get the crowd excited with old hits but what about the new stuff? Â I am not going to complain anymore because I did dance, drank and had a great time but my opinion stayed the same as two years ago.
On the other hand, lots of the people dancing were really professional and into the turns so I felt a little rusted.
Yesterday night was a completely different story. We had some friends over for drinks and Indian food. Then at midnight we went to a Toronto underground party in an old and abandoned building on the west part of the city. The place was super cool and great for pictures. We were dancing in the dust  to some all-over- the-world melodies and this time no high heels for me, HA!
Last year’s party was under a bridge and finished earlier because the police showed up and stopped the band. This time the activity continued non-stop, people slowly started going home and then us. Maybe we should be grateful that Caribana Festival was happening this weekend and no one cared about a small ilegal party.
Now I am back to reality. It is fantastic that tomorrow is a holiday and I have the chance to do more tasks at home. This week will be a busy one, focused on the departure and presenting my resignation letter at work. A whole new adventure in front of me! This is getting real.
Cheers to the road!
